The Vision of the new BLACK— VOLUNTEERISM art exhibition is two-fold. The first and central is to raise volunteerism awareness. If Volunteerism could speak, what would it say? This not for profit project educates and inspires. People of all ages and cultures are encouraged to put 'giving of themselves' into practice for the advancement of good in humanity and communities everywhere.

The second auxiliary note is demonstrated by virtue of the means, the Arts. We must consider returning the value to the Humanities and Creative art. This exhibition practices the belief that the Arts can and should be a part of positive experiences that lift the human spirit and add meaning for a purposeful life.

Living in a time where people are searching for purpose and antidotes to sadness and health issues, it is imperative to look at all that is at our disposal for resolution.
Giving may seem counter intuitive to the self, but data reveals that living for
self preservation renders meager gain. Any gain archived from it is
quite temporal... it fades quickly.

Alternatively, research about serving others grants a polar opposite account. Furthermore, there is weightiness when this message is told by volunteers themselves. This exhibition does just that. It gives their personal accounts of how they started and why they do it.

"This project is also my response to what I see and experience in the world. There is fear of going outside of ourselves. Too often I experience people who stay within what is familiar to them. There could be a gem of a person next to you. An experience that will make you a better you. Don't stay within your protected boundary. Get out and do good."

The exhibition is looking for its next venue to spread the benefits of Volunteerism east and west.

Using fine arts and narrative, Volunteerism is given a voice through featured local volunteers. Artist, D Nina Cruz, paints their likenesses on 2' x 3' wood panels using wood stain alone. This purposefully curated show displays these monochromatic works in different hues with encouraging biographies along side.

Each Bio offers the reason they serve, and personal perspective of what they have gained. The biographies end with a word of personal encouragement to act and take a leap of faith into loving and serving.

The finished works are semi-transparent, allowing the wood grain to 'interrupt' the likeness of each face. At onset this may seem intrusive, much like when considering the unknown of volunteering and serving. Once this dissipates, the wood grain now represents the fabric of a person's life. Consequently then, the wood stain symbolizes the decision each person made to volunteer. Finally, the painted likeness is both of these coming together to present a reflection of a life more transparent,
more full, warm and vibrant.

The Name of the Show
In the fashion industry, black is known as a color that never goes out of style.
Each year when the industry informs the public of what's hot for the season, it uses black to make the point that the upcoming trend will be just as fashionable as black.
"Plaid is the new black this season"
"Patent leather is the new black this season"
"Pearls are the new black this season"

Volunteerism never goes out of style, therefore, it is the new BLACK.
